Odisha Govt Sets Up Six Exclusive Special Courts for SC/ST Cases
The Odisha government has notified the establishment of six Exclusive Special Courts to fast‑track trials under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
These courts, functioning as Additional District and Sessions Judges‑cum‑Special Courts, will operate in Bhadrak, Ganjam (Berhampur), Jajpur, Kendrapara, Puri, and Khurda sub-divisions.
The move aims to reduce pendency and ensure timely justice for victims of caste‑based atrocities.
The initiative was driven under Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s leadership, following statutory consultations and recommendations from the Orissa High Court.
The State Human Rights Protection Cell (SHRPC), led by ADGP Yatindra Koyal, identified districts with high caseloads through pendency audits and coordinated the proposal.
The Home Department has now requested the High Court to appoint presiding judges.
Officials confirmed that proposals for additional special courts and special public prosecutors in other districts are under review, signalling a broader judicial reform push.
This step reflects Odisha’s commitment to victim‑centric justice and social equity, strengthening protections for marginalised communities.
