Odisha Floods Worsen as SRC Issues Advisory, SEOC Monitors 24×7

Bhubaneswar: The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has issued an advisory as heavy rainfall and rising river levels continue to worsen the flood situation across Odisha.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms with gusty winds and isolated heavy showers in districts including Balasore, Jajpur, Kendrapada, and Mayurbhanj.

Odisha recorded an average of 3.3 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, with Mayurbhanj’s Kuliana block receiving 58 mm.

Since July 1, cumulative rainfall has reached 647.4 mm — a surplus of 91.4% above normal.

Major rivers such as the Mahanadi, Brahmani, Baitarani, Burhabalanga, and Jalaka are witnessing fluctuating water levels.

Hirakud Dam currently stands at 624.10 ft, with two gates open to release excess water downstream.

Flood damage has been reported in Baleshwar, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Kendujhar, Kendrapada, and Khordha, including crop loss, house collapses, livestock casualties, and mass evacuations.

Relief operations are in full swing: over 33,000 people have been evacuated in Balasore and nearly 43,000 in Jajpur.

Relief camps and free kitchens are operational, while ODRAF, NDRF, and Fire Service teams — 136 units in total — are deployed across affected districts.

The SEOC is monitoring the situation round‑the‑clock, with senior officers stationed in vulnerable districts.

Residents have been urged to stay alert, avoid riverbanks, and take shelter during thunderstorms.
