Nuakhai 2026: Western Odisha Celebrates Harvest Amid Joy and Concerns
Western Odisha came alive today with the vibrant celebrations of Nuakhai, the agrarian festival that marks the offering of the season’s first grain.
Families reunited across towns and villages, filling homes with warmth, laughter, and traditional delicacies like pitha.
At the heart of the festival was the Nabanna ritual at Maa Samaleswari Temple in Sambalpur, where priests offered the newly harvested Nua Saria paddy between 9:40–9:54 am.
Following temple rituals, households across the region offered the new rice to their deities before partaking in the meal, symbolising gratitude to Mother Earth.
While the spirit of reunion and tradition remained strong, farmers voiced concerns over procurement delays at PACS and cooperatives, alongside fertiliser shortages and alleged black‑market sales.
These challenges cast a shadow over the festivities, leaving cultivators frustrated even as they upheld age‑old customs.
Nuakhai continues to embody resilience, gratitude, and cultural pride—reminding Odisha that the harvest is not only about crops, but also about community, tradition, and hope.
