Malkangiri Farmer Cultivates World’s Costliest Miyazaki Mangoes
In a remarkable achievement, a farmer from Tamasa village in Odisha’s Malkangiri district has successfully grown the world’s most expensive mango variety — the Japanese Miyazaki mango, popularly known as the “Egg of the Sun.”
Deba Madakami nurtured the sapling for four years after receiving it from social worker Sarv Kumar Bisoyi.
This season, the tree has finally borne fruit, each weighing over one kilogram. Internationally, Miyazaki mangoes fetch between Rs 1.5–2 lakh per kilogram, making them more valuable than gold.
To safeguard the rare produce, Deba has fenced the tree with bamboo and even sleeps in his garden at night to prevent theft.
The orchard has become a local attraction, drawing curious visitors from near and far.
Despite the success, Deba faces challenges in marketing and preservation, as few buyers in Odisha can afford such prices.
He has appealed to the state’s Horticulture and Agriculture departments for support in expanding cultivation and ensuring proper preservation.
This breakthrough marks only the second or third known instance of Miyazaki mango cultivation in India, with another orchard in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
The success in Malkangiri could open new opportunities for farmers in Odisha to diversify into high‑value crops.
