Justice BR Gavai Takes Oath as India’s 52nd Chief Justice
New Delhi, May 14, 2025 (OT Webdesk) – Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was officially sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India in a solemn ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath, and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and senior Cabinet ministers were in attendance.
Justice Gavai succeeds Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna, who retired on May 13. His tenure will be brief, lasting only six months until November 23, 2025. His elevation marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the second Chief Justice from the Scheduled Caste community, following former Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan.
During his distinguished legal career, Justice Gavai has contributed to several landmark Supreme Court verdicts, including cases on demonetization, Article 370, the electoral bond scheme, and SC/ST sub-classification.
After taking the oath, Justice Gavai honoured his mother by touching her feet in a gesture of respect. His family, including his wife, attended the event.
