Jeetu Munda Case: Odisha CM Intervenes, Swift Relief After Bank Tragedy
Keonjhar, April 28: A tragic incident unfolded in Dianali village, Keonjhar, when tribal man Jeetu Munda carried his deceased sister’s remains to a rural bank branch after months of failed attempts to withdraw her savings of Rs 19,402.
Despite repeated visits, Munda was unable to provide the required documents due to illiteracy and lack of awareness, leading to his desperate act.
Following widespread outrage, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi ordered immediate relief under the Lok Seva initiative.
District officials rushed to the village, providing Rs 30,000 assistance from the Red Cross Fund, fast-tracking the Death Certificate and Legal Heir Certificate, and coordinating with the bank to release the deposit.
Authorities admitted the case highlighted gaps in rural banking awareness and instructed officers to act with greater sensitivity.
Meanwhile, the Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) clarified that documents were mandatory for settlement, denying harassment claims but promising priority processing once paperwork was submitted.
The district administration assured that governance will remain committed to protecting the dignity and rights of vulnerable citizens, ensuring services reach “the last person in the queue.”
