IGIT Sarang Upgrade: Dharmendra Pradhan Urges Odisha CM for Unitary University Status

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has urged Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to elevate Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang, to the status of a Unitary University.

Established in 1982, IGIT Sarang has nearly 45 years of academic excellence, offering B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA, MSc, Architecture, Diploma, and PhD programs.

The institute already enjoys UGC autonomy, AICTE approval, NBA accreditation, and support under TEQIP.

Pradhan highlighted IGIT’s strategic location in the Dhenkanal–Angul industrial belt, making it an ideal hub for industry-linked research and innovation.

Upgrading IGIT to a Unitary University would provide greater academic autonomy, attract top faculty, enable multidisciplinary education, and strengthen industry collaborations.

The institute has existing partnerships, including a virtual lab with IIT Bombay and internships with the India Meteorological Department.

The proposal aligns with Odisha’s broader vision of strengthening technical education, alongside upgrades of VSSUT Burla and OUTR Bhubaneswar, supporting the state’s “Viksit Odisha 2036” mission.

Students, alumni, and educationists have welcomed the move, seeing it as a transformative step toward making Odisha a hub for quality technical education in eastern India.
