Odisha to Build 30 Truck Terminals for Safer Highways
The Odisha government has unveiled plans to construct 30 modern truck terminals along national highways to enhance road safety and provide essential facilities for long‑haul drivers.
According to the Commerce & Transport Department, 15 terminals have already been completed, with the remaining projects underway.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to manage, operate, and maintain the facilities.
The initiative comes in response to alarming statistics: over 300 deaths occur annually in Odisha due to unsafe roadside parking of heavy vehicles.
Truck drivers often park on highways and use roadside areas for cooking and resting, creating dangerous conditions for other motorists.
The new terminals will feature dedicated parking bays, rest areas, canteens, drinking water facilities, repair garages, and EV charging stations.
By encouraging truckers to use these terminals, the government aims to reduce accidents and fatalities while strengthening road safety infrastructure across the state.
