Hirakud Reservoir Opens 8 Gates as Inflow Surges

Bhubaneswar: Authorities at Hirakud Reservoir have opened eight sluice gates to discharge excess floodwater into the Mahanadi River following heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh.

The reservoir level has climbed to 619.91 feet, prompting urgent regulation measures.

According to officials, the inflow currently stands at 1,27,636 cusecs/sec, while the outflow has reached 2,11,897 cusecs/sec.

Five gates on the left spillway near Hirakud township and three on the right spillway near Burla are releasing more than 15,000 cusecs each.

Additional discharges include 28,139 cusecs through the Burla power channel, 247 cusecs for industrial use, and 3,043 cusecs via irrigation canals.

This marks the second major release of the season, following the July 9 operation when ten gates were opened.

Officials have indicated that more gates may be opened if inflow continues to rise.

Flood regulation protocols are in place, and monitoring is ongoing to safeguard downstream regions.
