Chameli Ojha Assault Case Sparks Political Storm in Odisha
Kendrapara’s Tikhiri Gram Panchayat Sarpanch, Chameli Ojha, was detained on June 11 following a confrontation at the block development office.
Ojha alleged verbal abuse and physical assault by supporters of a BJP MLA, claiming police mistreatment during the incident.
Her supporters described the arrest as politically motivated.
The Block Development Officer countered that Ojha and her brother forcefully entered the office, disrupted proceedings, and assaulted police personnel, including a woman sub‑inspector.
Ojha was subsequently arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
The incident drew sharp criticism from BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik, who condemned it as an “unspeakable atrocity” and accused the BJP of repressive tactics against women leaders.
He contrasted BJP’s “Nari Shakti Vandana” narrative with the treatment of Ojha, urging Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to intervene.
Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stated that a detailed report has been sought and assured appropriate action.
Meanwhile, opposition parties demanded a fair probe, and viral videos of the confrontation have intensified public debate.
The case has become a flashpoint in Odisha politics, raising questions about governance, women’s empowerment, and law enforcement impartiality under the BJP regime.
