Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project Temporarily Suspended, Not Cancelled: Minister Clarifies

Housing & Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra has clarified that the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project has not been scrapped but only suspended for review.

The Metro Corporation office continues to function as the matter is under consideration by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

The clarification follows Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi’s appeal to reconsider the cabinet’s decision.

Mahapatra criticised the previous BJD government for announcing the project without proper ground assessment or central support.

He revealed that test runs exposed serious communication and operational flaws, which could have led to larger issues if the project had continued in its current form.

An Inter‑Ministerial Committee has been formed to examine the project thoroughly, and a comprehensive mobility plan will be prepared before any final decision is taken.

The government reiterated its commitment to prioritising the welfare of the common man while ensuring sustainable urban transport solutions.
