Women Lead Conservation Efforts in Debrigarh Sanctuary
Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent Mann Ki Baat address brought pride to Odisha as he lauded Maithili Bhue of Debrigarh for her remarkable contributions to forest conservation and women’s empowerment through eco‑tourism.
Maithili, who joined Debrigarh’s eco‑tourism initiative in 2023, has been instrumental in promoting homestays, mobilising villagers to maintain plastic‑free surroundings, and encouraging cleanliness drives.
Her earlier efforts in Dhodrokusum transformed the village into a “Green Village” with toilets, dustbins, and reduced plastic use.
The recognition has energised the local community and sanctuary staff, who see it as a boost to conservation efforts and institutional support.
Officials highlighted that nearly 40% of participants in Debrigarh’s eco‑tourism are women, underscoring Maithili’s leadership in mobilising female involvement.
Residents expressed joy and renewed commitment to protecting forests, believing the Prime Minister’s mention will inspire wider participation in sustainable tourism and conservation.
