Supreme Court to Hear PIL on Odisha DGP Appointment Today
The Supreme Court of India will today hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the Odisha government’s process of appointing the next Director General of Police (DGP).
The three‑judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohan, will examine whether the State adhered to the Prakash Singh guidelines laid down in 2006 for police reforms.
The PIL, filed by Jayant Das of Baleshwar, alleges that the Odisha government bypassed transparency norms by promoting two Additional Director General (ADG)‑rank officers to DGP rank for inclusion in the selection panel.
Amicus curiae Raju Ramachandran has submitted reports questioning the legality of this move, arguing that it undermines the spirit of the Supreme Court’s directives on police leadership appointments.
