Onion Prices Surge in Bhubaneswar | Consumers Struggle with Rising Costs

Bhubaneswar residents are grappling with a sharp rise in onion prices, which have climbed from Rs 30 per kilogram to Rs 40–45 within just two days.

The sudden spike has forced households to cut back, with many opting to purchase only half a kilogram instead of their usual quantity.

Retailers attribute the surge to higher procurement and transportation costs, as onions are currently sourced from cold storage rather than fresh harvests.

Wholesale prices hover around Rs 33/kg, but transport and sorting add another Rs 6/kg, leaving retailers with slim margins.

The seasonal trend of rising prices before new harvests is being worsened by fuel price hikes and crop damage.

Unseasonal rains in Nashik and Indore have destroyed nearly 20% of the onion crop, delaying supply.

While onions are available in Gujarat’s Ahmednagar wholesale markets, prices remain high.

Traders warn that if supply remains tight, Bhubaneswar consumers may face further price hikes in the coming weeks.
