Odisha Weavers to Shine at Rashtrapati Bhavan on National Handloom Day

Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: Odisha’s rich handloom tradition will shine on the national stage as two master weavers from the state receive prestigious awards from President Droupadi Murmu during the 12th National Handloom Day celebrations at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre.

Ram Meher of Baragada has been selected for the Sant Kabir Handloom Award 2025, India’s highest recognition for lifetime excellence in weaving.

Prafulla Kumar Sahoo of Jagatsinghpur will be honoured with the National Handloom Award 2025 for his innovation and contribution to the sector.

The awards, chosen through a rigorous multi‑stage evaluation, highlight the artistry and dedication of India’s weaving community.

This year, 22 awards will be presented — three Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and 19 National Handloom Awards — covering weaving, design, marketing, startups, and producer organisations under the National Handloom Development Programme.

The ceremony will also witness the release of four commemorative postage stamps showcasing India’s diverse handloom heritage.

National Handloom Day, observed annually on August 7, commemorates the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, celebrating indigenous industries and the resilience of India’s artisans.
