Odisha Receives World Athletics Flag, Sets Stage for 2028 Indoor Championships

Bhubaneswar: In a landmark moment for Indian sports, Odisha has formally received the World Athletics flag, symbolising its readiness to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028.

The ceremonial handover took place at Kalinga Stadium, where Sports Minister Suryabanshi Suraj presented the flag to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

The flag, initially received in Poland by AFI’s Ravinder Choudhry and Sports Secretary Bhupendra Singh Poonia, marks India’s first opportunity to host a senior global athletics event of this scale.

Scheduled for March 2028 at the upcoming Kalinga Indoor Stadium, the championship is expected to showcase India’s growing sports infrastructure and organisational capacity.

Chief Minister Majhi described the flag as a “symbol of ambition, pride, and a promise to the world that India and Odisha are ready.” The event is projected to inspire a new generation of athletes, elevate India’s global sporting profile, and cement Odisha’s reputation as a hub for international sports.
