Odisha Ramps Up Flood Preparedness as Heavy Rainfall Looms
Bhubaneswar: With a low‑pressure system intensifying over the Bay of Bengal, Odisha braces for heavy to very heavy rainfall across northern districts until August 18.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, and Kendujhar, while several other districts remain under orange and yellow alerts.
Floods have already impacted 49 blocks, 331 gram panchayats, 947 villages, and five urban areas, affecting nearly 5.15 lakh people.
Of these, 2.37 lakh have been evacuated to safer locations, with relief provided in 293 camps. Essential supplies, including food and medicines, are being distributed.
To strengthen preparedness, 36 ODRAF teams, seven NDRF units, and 43 Fire Services teams have been deployed.
Medical teams and Rapid Response Teams are active, while power restoration efforts continue for 75,000 affected consumers.
Urban bodies are ensuring drainage and drinking water supply, and veterinary support is being extended to protect livestock.
Senior IAS officers have been deputed to assist district Collectors in Balasore, Jajpur, and Bhadrak.
The state government has cancelled leave for officers in affected districts and is extending immediate financial assistance.
Citizens are advised to avoid river embankments, while fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea for the next three days.
Odisha has recorded 953 mm of rainfall since June 1, 27% above normal, underscoring the severity of the ongoing monsoon season.
