Odisha Braces for Dual Weather Threat: Deadly Heatwave and Fierce Thunderstorms

Odisha is facing a rare and dangerous combination of extreme heat and violent thunderstorms this week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Heatwave Alerts:

  • Boudh and Bolangir are under a Red Warning today, with life‑threatening heatwave conditions.
  • Severe heat will persist over the next three days, with risks of dehydration, heatstroke, and exhaustion.
  • Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with health conditions, are most at risk.

Thunderstorm Alerts:

  • Angul, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Ganjam, and Gajapati face an Orange Warning for thunderstorms with winds up to 60 kmph.
  • By Days 4–5, storm activity will intensify across Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Sambalpur.
  • Risks include property damage, crop loss, and localised power outages.

Coastal & Humidity Warnings:

  • Coastal districts, including Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Balasore, and Ganjam, will endure hot, humid conditions.
  • Bolangir and Sambalpur will see “warm nights” with little relief from daytime heat.
  • Light to moderate rainfall is expected from Day 4, offering temporary relief but raising humidity levels.

Safety Guidelines:

  • Stay hydrated, avoid peak sun hours (11 AM–3 PM), and wear light cotton clothing.
  • During thunderstorms, seek shelter indoors, avoid trees and metal structures, unplug electronics, and stay away from water bodies.

The IMD has urged citizens to remain vigilant as Odisha navigates this dual weather threat.
