NCST Seeks Sasmit Patra’s Comments on Sijimali Mining Probe
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has sought comments from BJD Rajya Sabha MP Dr Sasmit Patra regarding the ongoing investigation into alleged police excesses and tribal rights violations linked to the Sijimali bauxite mining project in Odisha’s Kalahandi and Rayagada districts.
The Commission initiated its inquiry in November 2025 after receiving petitions from villagers who claimed harassment and intimidation during protests against the mining project.
Odisha authorities defended their actions, citing Gram Sabhas under the Forest Rights Act and a High Court ruling that upheld administrative processes.
Police maintained that criminal cases were filed due to violence and obstruction, describing the protests as externally influenced.
Vedanta Limited was issued a Letter of Intent in March 2023 for mining rights over 1,549 hectares, but statutory clearances remain pending.
Tribal communities, under the banner of Maa Mati Moli Surakhya Manch, continue to oppose the project, warning of ecological damage and loss of livelihoods.
Dr Patra has already submitted petitions highlighting police excesses and tribal rights violations.
His response to NCST is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of the inquiry.
The Commission, empowered under Article 338A of the Constitution, has civil court‑like powers to summon officials and take action if violations are proven.
The outcome of this probe could significantly impact both the future of the Sijimali mining project and the lives of thousands of tribal families in the region.
