Massive Hailstorm Batters Keonjhar, IMD Issues Alerts Across Odisha
Keonjhar district witnessed an unprecedented hailstorm on April 7, 2026, with hailstones weighing between 500 grams and 1 kilogram.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the phenomenon to an upper air cyclonic circulation over Chhattisgarh, which triggered thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and hail across northern and coastal Odisha.
The IMD has issued an Orange Warning for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Keonjhar, forecasting severe thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain, and winds up to 60 km/h. A Yellow Warning has been declared for Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda, predicting moderate thunderstorms with winds between 30 and 50 km/h.
The seven‑day forecast indicates widespread rain and hail risk until April 11, followed by dry weather and rising temperatures from April 12 onwards.
Districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Khordha, and Ganjam are expected to experience heat discomfort due to humidity.
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open fields and tall structures, secure loose objects against strong winds, and stay updated through official IMD advisories.
