Hirakud Dam Opens 24 Gates as Floodwaters Surge

Bhubaneswar: Authorities at Hirakud Dam have intensified flood management measures by opening 24 sluice gates to release excess water as reservoir levels continue to rise.

The current water level stands at 628.19 feet, with inflow recorded at 3,39,018 cusecs per second and outflow at 3,64,432 cusecs per second.

Of the total discharge, 3,26,100 cusecs are being released through the spillway, while 34,448 cusecs flow through the power channel.

Officials have warned that the flood pulse is expected to reach Mundali by tonight, carrying nearly six lakh cusecs of water downstream.

District administrations are on high alert as swelling tributaries of the Mahanadi raise concerns of localised flooding in vulnerable regions.

Emergency teams are monitoring the situation closely, urging communities in low‑lying areas to remain vigilant.
