Darshan Suspended at Srimandir for Emergency Purification Ritual

Puri, April 17: Darshan at the Jagannath Temple in Puri was temporarily suspended on Friday morning after servitors noticed blood drops near the Bhitara Katha area soon after the Mangala Alati ritual.

The temple administration, in consultation with senior priests, immediately initiated the Bada Mahasnana — a grand purification bath of the sibling deities — as part of Gupta Niti (confidential temple practice).

During the ritual, entry was restricted to authorised servitors only, ensuring strict adherence to age-old customs.

Following the completion of the purification ceremony, darshan for devotees resumed.

The Bada Mahasnana is traditionally performed whenever impurities such as blood stains, vomiting, or death occur inside the temple premises, reaffirming the sanctity of Srimandir before reopening to the public.
