Cyclone Alert: Low Pressure Likely in Bay of Bengal Mid‑May
Bhubaneswar, May 2: Meteorologists are closely monitoring the Bay of Bengal as the Global Forecast System (GFS) indicates the formation of a low‑pressure system between May 11 and 15.
The system, expected to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal, may intensify into a cyclonic circulation, raising concerns of a possible cyclone genesis.
While the forecast has drawn attention, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has yet to issue an official confirmation.
Odisha, which has a history of severe cyclones during the pre‑monsoon season, remains on alert.
Meanwhile, recent extreme weather events have already impacted the state. In Balangir district, lightning claimed the life of Niranjan Barik, leaving his differently‑abled son orphaned.
In Cuttack’s Badamba area, a man died after a tree collapsed during a Kalbaishakhi storm. Sambalpur’s Redhakhol block also witnessed widespread damage, with strong winds uprooting trees, damaging transformers, and disrupting power supply across villages.
Local residents have urged the administration to provide immediate relief and compensation to affected families.
The incidents highlight the growing vulnerability of Odisha to sudden weather extremes, even as forecasts point to larger systems brewing in the Bay of Bengal.
