Centre Extends Mahanadi Tribunal Tenure Till January 2027
Bhubaneswar, April 11: The Central Government has extended the tenure of the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal until January 13, 2027, granting more time to resolve the long‑standing water‑sharing dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
Odisha has consistently raised concerns over Chhattisgarh’s upstream barrages and water usage, warning of reduced downstream flow that could impact agriculture, drinking water supply, and ecological balance.
The tribunal, set up under the Inter‑State River Water Disputes Act, will continue examining technical data, expert reports, and submissions from both states before delivering a final verdict.
Officials said the extension reflects the Centre’s intent to ensure a thorough legal and technical review, aiming for a fair and sustainable solution to safeguard livelihoods and ecosystems dependent on the Mahanadi River.
