Bhubaneswar gears up for Maha Shivaratri at Lingaraj Temple

Bhubaneswar: The historic Lingaraj Temple is set to witness grand celebrations of Maha Shivaratri on February 15, 2026, with thousands of devotees expected to gather for the sacred rituals.

The highlight of the festival will be the lifting of the Mahadeep (sacred lamp) atop the temple crown at 10 pm, marking the spiritual climax of the day-long observances.

Devotees traditionally fast throughout the day and break their fast only after the Mahadeep is raised, symbolising divine blessings and the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti.

The 11th-century shrine, one of Odisha’s most revered temples, will see elaborate arrangements by the temple administration to ensure the smooth conduct of rituals and the safety of devotees.

Authorities have emphasised creating a peaceful and devotional atmosphere, making the Mahadeep lighting a memorable experience for all.

With Bhubaneswar emerging as a hub of cultural tourism, the Maha Shivaratri celebrations at Lingaraj Temple are expected to draw not only local devotees but also visitors from across India.
