Sloth Bear Rescued After Falling Into Well in Mayurbhanj

Mayurbhanj (Odisha): A dramatic rescue unfolded in Dinashahi village under Udala forest range when a sloth bear fell into a narrow agricultural well while searching for honey.

The bear had climbed a mango tree to feed on a beehive but slipped into the dug well, unable to escape due to the steep walls.

Alerted villagers quickly informed the Udala Forest Department, prompting a rescue team from Baripada to rush to the spot.

The distressed bear, thirsty and agitated, even destroyed a water container lowered by staff.

To calm the animal, officials dropped ice blocks into the well.

Forest officials confirmed the bear’s condition is stable and it is under continuous monitoring.

Plans are underway to release it back into its natural habitat by evening.

The incident drew large crowds, with authorities urging villagers to maintain distance for safety.

Wildlife experts note that sloth bears are common in Mayurbhanj, especially near Similipal Tiger Reserve.

Human‑wildlife encounters often rise in summer as animals venture closer to villages in search of food and water.
