Puri Gajapati Maharaja Urges ISKCON to Follow Traditional Tithi for Jagannath Festivals

Puri: Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb has formally urged ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission (GBC) to adhere to the prescribed Tithis for the observance of Snana Yatra and Ratha Yatra across India and abroad.

In his letter, the Maharaja emphasised that these sacred rituals must be celebrated strictly on Jyestha Poornima (Snana Yatra) and Ashadha Shukla Paksha Dwitiya (Ratha Yatra), as per Jagannath tradition.

He cited scriptural authority and the final opinion of Shree Jagannatha Temple scholars, approved by the Temple Managing Committee, which prohibits altering festival dates.

The Maharaja noted that ISKCON temples worldwide have continued to hold celebrations on arbitrary dates, violating established norms.

He requested ISKCON to reconsider its 2025 decision and ensure uniform observance of these festivals within the prescribed nine‑day period.

This communication reflects his ongoing efforts to preserve the sanctity and global uniformity of Jagannath culture and rituals.
