Odisha Rolls Out AI-Based Traffic Enforcement to Boost Road Safety
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha State Transport Authority (STA) has officially launched the Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS) from August 1, 2026, marking a major step toward safer highways.
In its first phase, the AI-powered system has been deployed across four major highways, including the Raurkela–Sambalpur State Highway No. 10.
Equipped with advanced cameras, the system automatically detects violations such as over-speeding, triple riding on two-wheelers, wrong-side driving, and riding without helmets.
Once violations are recorded, the system generates digital evidence and issues e-challans without manual intervention, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
The STA has also notified speed limits:
- Four-lane highways: 60 kmph for two-wheelers, 100 kmph for light motor vehicles, 80 kmph for heavy vehicles.
- Two-lane highways: 50 kmph for two-wheelers, 60 kmph for light motor vehicles/four-wheelers.
Officials expect the initiative to significantly reduce accidents and improve compliance, making Odisha’s highways safer for all commuters.
