Odisha Races to Restore Drinking Water in Flood Zones
The Odisha government has placed safe drinking water supply at the forefront of its flood relief operations, ensuring affected communities receive immediate support.
According to official reports, 6,491 of 13,662 tube wells were impacted, with 2,710 already disinfected.
Out of 642 piped water supply projects, 357 were damaged, and 101 have been restored. Bhadrak, Balasore, and Jajpur districts remain the focus due to extensive infrastructure losses.
Emergency measures include deploying 47 DG sets, 10 mobile water treatment units, 37 tankers, and 35 vehicles/tractors.
Authorities have distributed 1.92 lakh bottles and pouches of drinking water, with 4.65 lakh kept in reserve.
A 24‑hour state‑level control room in Bhubaneswar coordinates with district teams to monitor progress.
Officials have emphasised that no contaminated source will be reused without disinfection.
Where restoration is not possible, water is supplied through tankers, synthetic tanks, mobile units, and packaged water.
The Water Resources Department has directed immediate repair of damaged infrastructure without waiting for disaster relief funds, underscoring the urgency of restoring essential services.
