Odisha on Edge as Rivers Surge Above Danger Mark

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered a flood crisis across northern Odisha, with the Baitarani, Jalaka, and Salandi rivers swelling dangerously above their thresholds.

At Anandapur and Akhuapada, the Baitarani has crossed the danger mark, threatening low‑lying areas in Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Chandbali.

The Jalaka and Salandi rivers are also rising rapidly, putting Baleshwar and surrounding districts at risk.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for western Odisha and orange warnings for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj.

Baleshwar alone recorded 246 mm of rainfall in a short span, intensifying flood fears.

Authorities have deployed ODRAF teams for rescue operations, evacuated vulnerable villages, and closed schools in Jajpur from the afternoon of July 28.

Loudspeaker warnings are being used to alert riverside residents, while relief camps are stocked with dry food, cooked meals, and drinking water.

Meanwhile, the Mahanadi river remains under close watch, though controlled releases from Hirakud Dam have reduced immediate risk.

Officials urge residents to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow instructions as the next 24 hours are critical for flood management.
