Odisha Information Commission Cuts RTI Backlog by 75%, Delegation Briefs Governor

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Information Commission has achieved a significant reduction in pending Right to Information (RTI) cases, bringing the backlog down from nearly 22,000 to around 5,500 cases.

The achievement was highlighted during a meeting between a delegation of the Commission and the Governor of Odisha.

The delegation was led by Chief Information Commissioner Manoj Parida and included Information Commissioners Jagannath Rath, Pranabindu Acharya, Pabitra Mandal, and Kalpana Pattnaik.

During the meeting, the Commission apprised the Governor of the measures adopted to enhance transparency, efficiency, and public access to information.

According to the Commission, several administrative and technological reforms have contributed to the sharp decline in pending appeals and complaints.

These include the issuance of same-day short orders following hearings, the conduct of proceedings in the Odia language, and the use of videoconferencing facilities that allow citizens from distant districts to attend hearings without travelling to the state capital.

The Commission has also strengthened its digital infrastructure by facilitating online RTI-related processes and uploading orders electronically, making information more accessible to applicants and public authorities.

In addition to improving case disposal rates, the Commission has focused on legal awareness and capacity building.

Nearly 300 law interns have received practical exposure to the RTI framework and legal procedures through engagement with the institution.

The delegation also informed the Governor that cases involving non-compliance with Commission orders are being referred to the Chief Secretary for appropriate administrative action, strengthening accountability mechanisms within public institutions.

The achievement is being viewed as a major step towards enhancing transparency and citizen-centric governance in Odisha, while reinforcing the effectiveness of the RTI Act as a tool for public accountability.
