Odisha Govt Cracks Down on Black Marketing to Keep Essential Commodity Prices Stable Amid Cyclone Threat

Bhubaneswar: Anticipating possible disruptions caused by an impending cyclone, the Odisha government has intensified market monitoring and enforcement measures to ensure uninterrupted availability of essential commodities and prevent unjustified price hikes.

The Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department has directed officials across the state to maintain strict vigilance over the supply and distribution of essential goods.

Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh has instructed enforcement teams to take stringent action against hoarding, black marketing and profiteering practices that may impact consumers during the weather emergency.

According to the department, the prices of key commodities, including pulses, edible oil, sugar, potatoes and onions, have remained stable across major markets when compared with the previous week.

Officials attributed the stability to continuous market surveillance and adequate stock availability.

Supply authorities have been conducting daily inspections to assess market conditions and monitor the purchase and sale prices of essential items.

The state administration has emphasised that any attempt to create artificial shortages or manipulate prices will invite strict action under the relevant provisions of law.

The department has also expressed optimism that the arrival of fresh locally grown vegetables in markets will help ease vegetable prices in the coming days.

Citizens have been urged to remain calm and avoid panic buying.

Consumers witnessing instances of black marketing, hoarding or overcharging have been asked to report such cases to the concerned Chief Civil Supplies Officer or local supply authorities for immediate intervention.

The proactive measures are aimed at safeguarding consumers and ensuring an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities as Odisha prepares for the cyclonic situation.
