ISKCON Harrisburg’s Ratha Yatra Sparks Calendar Debate

ISKCON Harrisburg went ahead with its 16th annual Ratha Yatra on June 20, 2026, at City Island despite a petition urging alignment with the traditional Jagannatha calendar of Puri.

The festival featured a grand chariot procession, kirtan, prasadam distribution, and cultural programs, drawing devotees and community members.

On June 18, a group of Jagannatha devotees from Odisha and abroad submitted a petition highlighting discrepancies between ISKCON’s observances and the Puri calendar.

They noted that Snana Yatra traditionally falls on June 29, Ratha Yatra on July 16, and Bahuda Yatra on July 24.

Harrisburg’s early celebrations (Snana Yatra on June 7, Ratha Yatra on June 20) were described as “untimely” and disruptive to ritual continuity.

Signatories, including Dr Debananda Pati, Ajaya K. Mohanty, and Dr Nrusingh C. Biswal, expressed anguish over the deviation, stressing that Jagannatha worship is inseparable from its sacred sequence.

ISKCON Harrisburg, however, emphasised its outreach mission, promoting the June 20 festival as part of its Festival of India.

Leaders cited Srila Prabhupada’s guidance that allowed flexibility in dates for practical reasons such as weather, attendance, and community engagement.

The episode underscores a wider debate within Vaishnava circles: balancing global outreach and logistical adaptation with fidelity to traditional Odia practices rooted in the Jagannatha calendar.
