Green Diwali Campaign Urges People to Choose Balloons Over Firecrackers
Bhubaneswar: As the festive season approaches, environmentalists and students across Odisha are advocating for a cleaner and safer Diwali by encouraging people to replace firecrackers with eco-friendly alternatives such as balloons and traditional earthen lamps.
Environmental activist Sushanta Sahoo has launched a public awareness campaign urging citizens to celebrate the festival responsibly.
Through his message, he emphasises the importance of protecting public health and preserving the environment while enjoying the spirit of Diwali.
The campaign promotes the slogan, “Stay safe, keep others safe, save the environment, and pop balloons instead of crackers,” highlighting concerns over the harmful effects of firecrackers.
According to environmental advocates, excessive use of crackers contributes to air and noise pollution, impacting children, senior citizens, patients, and individuals with respiratory ailments.
The movement has also received support from students and social organisations across the state.
A notable contribution came from Shantanu Shantiswaroop, a Class VII student of Saraswati Shishu Vidyamandir, Bhimatangi, Bhubaneswar, who created a painting carrying the message “Green Diwali, Clean Diwali.”
The artwork aims to spread awareness about environmentally responsible celebrations and inspire communities to adopt sustainable practices.
Advocates of the campaign encourage families to illuminate their homes with traditional diyas, foster togetherness, and celebrate the festival in a way that minimises environmental impact.
They believe that a greener approach to Diwali can preserve the festival’s essence while ensuring cleaner air and a healthier future for all.
The campaign serves as a reminder that the true spirit of Diwali lies in spreading light, happiness, and goodwill rather than contributing to pollution, making the festival both joyful and environmentally responsible.
