From Odisha to Karnataka: Subroto Bagchi to Lead State’s Skilling Vision
The Karnataka government has appointed Subroto Bagchi, co‑founder of Mindtree and former chairman of the Odisha Skill Development Authority, as Chairman of the newly formed Vision Group for Skill Development.
The group, established under the Karnataka State Skill Policy 2025, aims to provide strategic direction for building a future‑ready, industry‑aligned workforce.
It brings together leaders from industry, academia, civil society, and government, marking the first Vision Group in the state dedicated exclusively to skill development.
Bagchi emphasised that humanity is at an “inflexion point” in the future of work, and Karnataka has the opportunity to reclaim leadership in skill development.
The Vision Group will advise on priorities, gaps, interventions, and implementation of the State Skill Policy 2025–32.
A seasoned entrepreneur and philanthropist, Bagchi co‑founded Mindtree in 1999 and later served as its COO and Chairman.
In 2016, he was appointed with Cabinet Minister status to lead Odisha’s Skill Development Authority, and he also served as the state’s chief spokesperson during the early COVID‑19 response.
His philanthropic contributions include Rs 340 crore for a cancer centre in Bhubaneswar, Rs 212.5 crore for a hospital at IISc Bengaluru, and Rs 55 crore for a School of Public Health at Ahmedabad University.
With his appointment, Karnataka hopes to strengthen its skilling ecosystem and prepare its workforce for emerging global challenges.
