Deep Depression Weakens Over South Odisha, IMD Issues Red Alert for Three Districts
A deep depression that crossed the north Andhra–south Odisha coast late Wednesday has weakened after moving inland, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
As of 9 PM, the system was centred near Koraput, moving northwest at around 10 km/h. IMD forecasts it will weaken into a depression within six hours and further into a low‑pressure area by early Thursday.
Heavy rainfall has already lashed several districts, with Koraput recording 10 cm, Malkangiri 9 cm, and Nabarangpur 7 cm on Wednesday.
The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Koraput, warning of extremely heavy rainfall.
Orange Alerts are in place for Nuapada, Balangir, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Gajapati, and Ganjam, while Yellow Alerts cover districts including Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj.
Squally winds of 50–60 km/h, gusting to 70 km/h, are expected to ease overnight.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Bay of Bengal until Thursday morning, with cautionary signals hoisted at all Odisha ports.
Authorities warn of flash‑flood risks, waterlogging, traffic disruption, landslides, crop damage, and minor damage to houses and power lines.
Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid travel, and follow official advisories as the next 12–18 hours remain critical for southern Odisha districts.
