CM Majhi Calls for Ethical Journalism at The Samaja’s 107th Foundation Day
Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday emphasised the need for responsible and ethical journalism, urging media organisations to prioritise truth and public interest over sensationalism and commercial considerations during the 107th Foundation Day celebration of The Samaja in Bhubaneswar.
Addressing the gathering at Rabindra Mandap, the Chief Minister lauded The Samaja for its century-long commitment to credible journalism and social service.
He paid tribute to the newspaper’s founder, Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, stating that the publication has played a significant role in shaping public opinion and promoting social welfare in Odisha.
Expressing concern over the growing trend of sensationalised reporting and misinformation, Majhi said that the core values of journalism must not be compromised in the race for viewership and digital engagement.
He noted that despite the rapid growth of social media and 24-hour news cycles, print media continues to enjoy public trust because of its commitment to fact-based reporting.
The Chief Minister urged media institutions to focus on issues that affect the common people and maintain impartiality while informing citizens.
According to him, a free and responsible press remains essential for strengthening democracy and ensuring social accountability.
During his speech, Majhi also highlighted several welfare initiatives undertaken by the Odisha government.
These include the implementation of free education from Kindergarten to Post-Graduation, expansion of social security coverage for senior citizens, and various schemes aimed at supporting women, marginalised communities and economically weaker sections.
He further outlined the government’s efforts in healthcare, housing and education infrastructure, including cashless treatment facilities and the expansion of model schools across the state.
Reiterating the state’s development agenda, the Chief Minister said Odisha is working towards becoming a prosperous and developed state by 2036, coinciding with its centenary celebrations.
He added that responsible journalism would play a crucial role in supporting the vision of a developed Odisha and contributing to the broader goal of a developed India by 2047.
The event witnessed the participation of senior journalists, media professionals, public representatives and dignitaries who celebrated the enduring legacy of The Samaja, one of Odisha’s oldest and most influential newspapers.
