CM Majhi Calls for Drug-Free Campuses as Odisha Revives Student Union Elections
Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday called upon newly elected student union representatives across Odisha to work towards building drug-free campuses and strengthening democratic values in educational institutions.
He made the appeal while addressing the Young Leaders Conclave 2026 at Kataka Indoor Stadium.
Addressing hundreds of student leaders, the Chief Minister described the revival of student union elections after nearly a decade as a significant victory for democracy.
He noted that student elections had been discontinued in 2017 and said their return would help nurture future leadership and democratic participation among youth.
Majhi praised the peaceful and disciplined conduct of the elections despite concerns raised by certain groups regarding the holding of campus polls.
He said the successful completion of the process demonstrated the maturity and responsibility of Odisha’s student community.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the strong performance of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the elections, drawing comparisons with the organization’s recent successes in student politics elsewhere in the country.
He stated that the results reflected the aspirations and changing outlook of young voters.
Urging student leaders to become agents of positive change, Majhi asked them to focus on addressing academic and hostel-related issues, safeguarding student welfare, and creating a healthy educational environment.
He emphasised the need to keep campuses free from drug abuse and encouraged elected representatives to serve fellow students with dedication and responsibility.
The Chief Minister said student unions should play a constructive role in campus development and contribute to building a stronger and more progressive Odisha.
