Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure Area to Intensify into Deep Depression, IMD Issues Advisory

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast warning that a low-pressure system over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a deep depression.

The system is expected to move west-northwestwards, reaching near the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coasts by September 23.

According to IMD, wind speeds will gradually increase across the Bay of Bengal, with squally conditions likely along the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea between September 20–24 due to rough to very rough conditions.

Those already at sea are urged to return to safer areas immediately.

The IMD has also warned of potential coastal impacts, including strong winds of 55–65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph along the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Neighbouring regions such as West Bengal and South Andhra Pradesh may also experience squally weather.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with preparedness measures being emphasised to mitigate risks from the approaching system.
