Strong El Niño May Shape Odisha’s Monsoon in 2026
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the development of a strong El Niño by late September, which is expected to influence rainfall patterns across Odisha.
According to the IMD, the monsoon is likely to touch the state around mid‑June, coinciding with the Raja festival.
While southern and central Odisha may receive normal to above‑normal showers, northern districts are expected to face below‑normal rainfall.
The overall June–September rainfall is projected to be around 90% of the long‑term average.
Weather experts suggest that temperatures will stabilise between July and August as El Niño transitions into a moderate phase.
Until then, humid and sultry conditions are likely to persist.
IMD continues to monitor oceanic conditions closely to provide timely updates on rainfall distribution and intensity.
