Snakebite Tragedy: Nandankanan Loses Its Only Marmosets

Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident at Nandankanan Zoological Park, the zoo lost its only two marmoset monkeys after they were bitten by a poisonous snake inside their enclosure.

The deaths occurred early in the morning between 5 am and 6 am in enclosure 59(F) of the Monkey World section, which houses exotic primates.

According to reports, the snake managed to slip through the wire mesh of the enclosure and attacked the monkeys within an hour. Both succumbed shortly afterwards.

Animal lovers and wildlife enthusiasts have strongly criticised the zoo authorities, alleging negligence in maintaining safety standards.

The enclosure was designed to prevent outside animals from entering, yet the breach has raised serious concerns about the zoo’s preparedness and monitoring systems.

The incident has sparked debate over the management of exotic species in Indian zoos and the urgent need for stricter safety protocols to protect vulnerable animals.
