Six Dead, One Critical in Kalahandi Septic Tank Tragedy

Kalahandi, Odisha: A tragic incident unfolded in Gaud Karlakhunta village when six people lost their lives, and one was critically injured after suffocating inside an under-construction septic tank.

According to reports, three masons, a labourer, the house owner, and his son entered the tank to remove centring materials.

They lost consciousness due to suspected toxic gas exposure and lack of oxygen.

In a desperate attempt to rescue them, others also entered the tank but met the same fate.

Locals and officials rushed the victims to Madanpur Rampur Community Health Centre, where six were declared dead on arrival. One worker remains in critical condition.

Police have launched an investigation, with preliminary findings pointing to asphyxiation from toxic gases.

Authorities are examining whether safety protocols and protective equipment were followed.

Experts highlight that septic tanks often contain hazardous gases such as methane and hydrogen sulfide, underscoring the urgent need for stricter safety measures in confined-space construction work.

The incident has sparked grief in the community and renewed calls for better enforcement of workplace safety standards.
