Sick Tiger Cub Rescued in Mayurbhanj, Taken for Treatment
A tense night unfolded in Khaparkhai village near the Similipal Tiger Reserve when a sick tiger cub strayed into human habitation on September 24.
Villagers spotted the cub and quickly alerted forest officials.
Heavy rainfall forced the cub to seek shelter inside a vacant government house under the PMAY scheme, where locals locked it safely until help arrived.
On September 25, a joint team of forest officers and Similipal Tiger Reserve staff conducted a careful rescue operation using nets and a transport cage.
The cub, estimated to be 7–8 months old, was found to be ill and is currently receiving veterinary care at the Thakurmunda Range Office.
Officials plan to shift the cub to a special enclosure at Jamuani within Similipal once its health stabilises.
Its recovery and hunting instincts will be closely monitored before any release into the wild.
The incident highlights both the villagers’ quick thinking and the forest department’s coordinated response to safeguard wildlife.
