Odisha Govt Orders Uniform Place‑Name Spellings Across Institutions
The Odisha Revenue & Disaster Management Department has directed all district Collectors to enforce uniform use of revised English spellings of place names, aligning them with Odia pronunciation.
The Gazette Notification issued on June 22, 2026, mandated that Government offices adopt the revised spellings within one month, while private institutions have six months to comply.
However, reports indicate that several offices continue to display old spellings, prompting stricter enforcement.
Collectors have been instructed to personally review signboards and ensure compliance within seven days.
Revised names include Anugola (Angul), Baleshwar (Balasore), Kendrapada (Kendrapara), Kataka (Cuttack), Jayapur (Jeypore), and Sora (Soro).
The Department emphasised that this directive is a top priority, requiring Collectors to submit compliance reports within a week.
The move aims to maintain consistency in official nomenclature, uphold the State Cabinet’s decision, and eliminate confusion caused by outdated spellings.
