Odisha Flood Crisis: Rivers Breach Danger Marks, Thousands Affected
Incessant rainfall from a deep depression has triggered severe flooding across Odisha, leaving thousands displaced and vast stretches of farmland submerged.
Major rivers including Subarnarekha, Jalaka, Budhabalanga, Baitarani, and Salandi have surged above danger levels, snapping road connectivity and inundating villages.
In Balasore, the Subarnarekha River at Rajghat rose to 11.68m against a danger mark of 10.36m, while Jalaka at Mathani flowed at 6.64m, breaching its limit.
Locals resorted to boats as crops and homes were devastated.
In Bhadrak, the Baitarani and Salandi rivers crossed danger levels for the seventh time this season, flooding municipal wards and panchayats.
Jajpur reported a 70‑foot breach in the Kani River embankment, inundating more than 10 villages.
Kendujhar faced rising waters from the Baitarani, while Nabarangpur saw 29 gram panchayats submerged, with paddy, maize, and vegetable fields destroyed.
Authorities remain on high alert, focusing on rescue and relief operations.
Long‑term concerns include crop devastation and infrastructure recovery, as Odisha braces for the aftermath of one of its worst flood seasons in recent years.
