Odisha College Student Sets Herself on Fire After Harassment | Sundargarh

Sundargarh, Odisha (Dec 7, 2025): A shocking incident has emerged from Lanjiberna village in Sundargarh district, where a 17-year-old college student attempted self-immolation after facing relentless harassment from a local youth.

The victim, a student of Sarbati Devi College in Rajgangpur, set herself ablaze late at night while at home.

Her mother rushed to extinguish the flames with a blanket, but the girl sustained severe burns covering nearly 90% of her body. She is currently battling for life at Rourkela Ispat General Hospital.

Police have arrested the accused, Nilesh Sahu (25) of Budakata village, who is married and allegedly harassed the girl repeatedly.

Authorities are investigating claims that the victim’s brother received threatening phone calls warning that his sister would be set on fire.

Sundargarh SP Amritpal Kaur visited the hospital and the victim’s residence, assuring strict action.

A scientific team has collected evidence, and police are probing whether the accused attempted blackmail under the guise of one-sided love.

The incident has sparked outrage in the community, highlighting the urgent need for stronger measures against harassment and protection for vulnerable women.
