Odisha CM Suspends IPS Dayal Gangwar Amid Balianta Lynching Controversy
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has suspended senior IPS officer Dayal Gangwar, who was serving as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Home Department.
The decision comes in the wake of public outrage following the mob‑lynching of GRP Constable Soumya Ranjan Swain in Balianta on May 7.
Swain’s family alleged that Gangwar had harassed the constable during his tenure as ADG (Railway), forcing him to perform personal tasks.
These claims, coupled with widespread protests, prompted the government to take swift disciplinary action.
The Crime Branch is currently investigating the case, while the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recorded statements from Swain’s family.
CM Majhi reiterated his government’s commitment to zero tolerance against misconduct, stressing that accountability and systemic reforms are essential to restore public trust.
This suspension marks a significant step in addressing concerns over police conduct and ensuring justice for the deceased constable.
