Odisha Charts Path to Lightning Safety with National Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction
Bhubaneswar: In a significant step toward strengthening disaster resilience, the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) is organising a two-day National Workshop on Lightning Safety in Bhubaneswar, bringing together leading scientists, disaster management experts, policymakers, and technical institutions from across the country.
The workshop aims to advance strategies for reducing lightning-related deaths and damages by fostering collaboration among government agencies, scientific institutions, and community stakeholders.
The initiative reflects Odisha’s continued commitment to disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
The inaugural session is scheduled to be attended by Suresh Pujari, Odisha’s Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, underscoring the state’s focus on strengthening safety measures against one of the most recurring natural hazards.
Experts and representatives from premier institutions, including the India Meteorological Department (IMD), IITM, NRSC, NCESS, NCMRWF, and IIT Bhubaneswar, are expected to participate in discussions on scientific forecasting, lightning detection, monitoring technologies, and emerging innovations in risk mitigation.
The first day of the workshop will focus on advances in lightning detection systems, forecasting capabilities, and technological tools that can support timely alerts and public safety interventions.
Experts will also share research findings and best practices for minimising the impact of lightning incidents.
By facilitating dialogue between researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, the workshop seeks to bridge the gap between science and implementation, helping communities become better prepared for lightning-related disasters.
The event is expected to contribute to the development of more effective early warning systems, enhanced public awareness, and stronger coordination among stakeholders working toward a safer and more resilient Odisha.
