IMD Warns of Thunderstorms, Rain Across Odisha for Next Five Days

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day weather warning for several districts of Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and light to moderate rainfall under the influence of a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the weather department, a Yellow Warning has been issued for multiple coastal and southern Odisha districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagarh.

The IMD has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and surface winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph in several parts of the state.

Coastal and southern districts are likely to witness heightened weather activity, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain alert during the forecast period.

The adverse weather conditions are expected to continue for the next five days before gradually easing.

The forecast comes as the southwest monsoon begins its withdrawal from Odisha, having already retreated from parts of western and interior districts.

Meteorologists attribute the anticipated rainfall to a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is expected to move west-northwestward and intensify into a depression.

The system is likely to influence weather conditions across Odisha during the coming days.

Speaking on the evolving weather pattern, Dr Rajashree, VPM of IMD, noted that monsoon withdrawal is underway in the state while the developing weather system over the Bay is expected to bring fresh rainfall activity.

Residents, especially those in coastal and southern districts, have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open fields, and follow weather updates issued by local authorities and the IMD.

While the rainfall may cause temporary disruptions, it is also expected to provide relief from prevailing humid conditions.
