Nuapada Police Rescue 17 Migrant Workers Being Transported to Hyderabad

Nuapada: In a major operation against suspected illegal labour migration, Nuapada Police rescued 17 migrant workers, including children, who were allegedly being transported to Hyderabad for work through unauthorised channels.

Acting on credible intelligence, Sinapali Police conducted two separate rescue operations near Godal Chhak and intercepted groups of migrant workers waiting to travel to Telangana.

During the first operation, eight workers were rescued, while another nine were rescued in a subsequent operation.

Preliminary investigation revealed that labour contractors, commonly known as sardars, had allegedly persuaded the workers with promises of better wages and employment opportunities in Hyderabad.

Police found that the workers were being moved without mandatory documentation and safeguards required under labour laws.

Officials stated that the rescued workers did not possess valid movement orders, work permits, travel passes, or legally mandated displacement and travel allowances.

Following the rescue, police registered cases under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1979.

Authorities said strict legal action would be taken against those involved in the alleged trafficking and illegal recruitment of workers.

Investigators are also probing the broader network of labour intermediaries operating in the region.

The operation highlights ongoing concerns over unsafe and illegal migration of workers from western Odisha to other states, often facilitated by unregistered agents promising employment opportunities.
